โฆ Synopsis
will celebrate his sixtieth birthday on December 20, 1984. In view of his profound influence on the content of the Journal of Elasticity since its inception, it is especially appropriate that this December 1984 issue be dedicated to Jerry Ericksen.
The regular readers of the Journal will be quite familiar with the major contributions that he has made to mechanics in general and to elasticity in particular. They also will be aware of his various awards such as the Bingham Medal of the Society of Rheology in 1968, the Timoshenko Medal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1979, and the degree of Doctorate of Science honoris causa from the National University of Ireland in 1984. Accordingly, I have asked his friend and colleague at the University of Minnesota, R.L. Fosdick, to prepare the more personal remarks on Professor Ericksen which appear below. This is a regular issue of the Journal of Elasticity; none of the articles herein were submitted nor solicited for this special occasion.
