โฆ Synopsis
P rofessor Marks earned his B.S. from Washington and Lee University, Summa Cum Laude, in 1960. His life-long interest in bone and teeth derived from his dental studies at the University of North Carolina (1960-64). There, it became apparent to him that the current explanations for shedding and eruption of teeth eruption theories were stifled in obsolete mechanical theories. He selected graduate study at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy, to rethink the problem using advanced techniques in cell biology. His Ph.D. dissertation, (1968) directed by the late Professor Don Walker, launched a remarkably successful career in bone biology. With a two-year United States Navy commitment behind him he was re-cruited in 1970 to help pioneer the Anatomy Department, home of the new University of Massachusetts Medical School. He was in instrumental in developing the new anatomic and medical curricula. A member of the medical school's first class spoke at the Memorial Service held in Worcester, MA shortly after his death.
