Roep, almost 20 years a member of the editorial board of Sedimentary Geology, died at his desk on Monday September 15th 1997 from a cardiac arrest. He was busy reading a draft manuscript on Messinian successions of the Nijar and Sorbas basins of southeastern Spain, his favourite field area.
Tom was born and. grew up in the western part of The Netherlands, on the coastal plains of Holland.
After finishing grammar school in 1955 he went to the Geological Institute of the University of Amsterdam. He obtained his 'doctoraal' exam in geology in 1964, and accepted a lecturer position at this Geological Institute in the same year.
