Abbot S. ''Toby'' Gaunt received his undergraduate degree at Amherst College and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Kansas. Following a teaching assignment at Middlebury College, he conducted post-doctoral studies in functional morphology with Dr. Carl Gans at the University of Buffalo.
Then, in 1969 he joined the Department of Zoology at Ohio State University. He was a devoted teacher of comparative anatomy for more than a quarter century.
Dr. Gaunt held memberships in a number of professional societies and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Ornithologist's Union. He was Chair of the Division of Vertebrate Morphology of the American Society of Zoologists and was President of the Wilson Ornithological Society.
Dr. Gaunt's research interests centered upon biomechanics and, in particular, upon sound production in birds. Throughout his career, he enjoyed a productive collaboration with Dr. Carl Gans and served as Associate Editor for Morphology for the Biology of the Reptilia treatise. He was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Morphology for a number of years.
