Ronald Cowden served as Associate Editor of a number of scientific journals, including the Journal of Morphology, serving our journal from 1972 until the time of his death. He made significant contributions to biological science through his research activities in cell biology and the study of invertebrate animals. He was a caring mentor and a major influence in the development of my career. I repeat the dedication in the Decapod Crustacea volume of Microscopic Anatomy of Invertebrates, ''To Ronald Reed Cowden, my teacher, my colleague, and always, my friend.''
