โฆ Synopsis
Our colleague and friend Claude Janvier helped to plan, and co-edited, two special issues of the Journal of Mathematical Behavior devoted to "Representations and the Psychology of Mathematics Education" (Vol. 17, Nos. 1 and 2). Sadly, he did not live to see the results of his hard work. Claude's valiant struggle with his long illness came to an end this past June, and the world mathematics education community feels the loss keenly. This is the second of the two special issues that Claude co-edited, and it is dedicated to his memory.
Claude was a careful thinker and an exceptional contributor. His legacy-the advancement of research and the improvement of practice in mathematics education-is extensive. His activities were so numerous that it is extremely difficult, even for those who knew him best, to summarize his work.
