✦ Synopsis

He was also the co-author of six books and the author or co-author of more than 150 book chapters and journal articles. He was most noted among psychotherapists and psychotherapy researchers for his efforts to integrate clinical practice with research knowledge. He defined the doseresponse relationship, in which treatment outcome was found to be a progressive function of the length of psychotherapy. He also was a strong critic of the tendency for contemporary research to rely excessively on efficacy methodologies to the exclusion of effectiveness models. He advocated the concept of clinical utility research and framed the mission of this journal accordingly. Dr. Howard's critiques of studies that place unquestioning faith in the ability of random patient assignment to balance treatment groups moved the field of treatment research to a new acknowledgment of the importance of studying psychotherapy within actual clinical environments.

Professor Howard was the co-author (with David Orlinsky) of the "Generic Model of Psychotherapy," an integrative model that has been useful for understanding and predicting the results of psychotherapy. This model incorporated patient, therapist, relationship, technique, and contextual variables into an understanding of psychotherapy process and outcomes. His most recent contributions focused on developing and introducing methods for evaluating the effectiveness of mental health services that truly reflect individual patients' progress, aiming to replace the arbitrary criteria often used by managed care companies and health insurance providers with professionally responsible, clinically meaningful measures.

Ken Howard was a remarkably engaging man who combined deep empathy for others with a straightforward manner and distinctive sense of humor. He attracted many colleagues to become productive long-term collaborators and devoted friends. His widely felt influences on the field of psychological research included co-founding the Society for Psychotherapy Research, an international society that now includes membership representing nearly 25 countries. Dr. Howard served both as the first President of this Society (1970Society ( -1971) ) and in later years, as its Executive Officer (1986)(1987)(1988)(1989)(1990). He also
