Q &A with Mark Dawson
Q: Who is Beatrix Rose?
Mark: Beatrix was the prime agent in Group 15, a top secret and entirely off-the-books kill squad operated by the British Secret Service. Her story was started in Ghosts, the most recent John Milton novel (although it should be noted that you don't need to have read that book to read this one). She was double crossed by her commanding officer and left for dead in Hong Kong. When Milton's actions allow her to come out of hiding, she has revenge on her mind. I knew I was going to have to finish her story when I was working on Ghosts. She is a strong character with an interesting history, and she allows me to write a series that moves even more quickly than the Milton books. This is flat-out, balls-to-the-wall action set in a series of interesting and very carefully researched locations.
Q: So why Somalia?
M: Because I haven't read anything else set there, it's an incredibly dangerous place and it's perfect as a setting for the propulsive conclusion that brings this story to a close.
Q: The Milton series is going from strength to strength. Why are you starting another?
M: John Milton will be back shortly but I just felt that I had to tell this story. Readers have demanded it and I'm happy to oblige. The Milton books are grounded and realistic, with a really carefully developed character who evolves over the course of the series. Beatrix does, too, but I've deliberately given her a specific mission and a fixed deadline within which to achieve it (and I'm not going to spoil that here). Once she gets going, she literally can't stop, and that allows me to crank the tension and action up all the way. I wanted to write a no-holds-barred runaway train of a book, full of action and unexpected twists to leave your stomach in knots.
Q: Who are you writing for?
M: My readers love big, explosive thrillers. I know from email and reviews that they read all the big names, and I'm very happy that they feel they can enjoy a Ludlum, then a Fleming, and then something by me. These books are carefully crafted with velocity in mind and the intention is that if you read it in bed, you're going to lose sleep. They are designed to be totally unputdownable.
