It is self-evident that materials play a key role in semiconductor technology but often it is impurities, their presence or absence, which are the determining factor. Materials purity and device technology are continually playing catch-up. Eventually, technology reaches a point where it needs even better materials to realise its full capability. So it goes on, with advances being limited by the status of materials and technology in turn.
