Abstract
When rapid organizational growth exposed vulnerabilities at the supervisory level, Mayo Clinic Scottsdale tested two interventions, training and coaching, for their relative effectiveness in upgrading the skills of first‐line managers. The results of this applied research in the premier health care and teaching facility not only gave the clinic clear direction for its supervisory development efforts but also produced an impressive reduction in employee turnover and a very healthy return on investment. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
