Periodic cleaning of a membrane to remove foulant accumulations is essential to maintain quality and quantity of product water and maximize membrane life. This paper discusses issues such as when to clean, how to select a chemical treatment and how to evaluate the success of the cleaning procedure. Operating histories of several RO systems are discussed to illustrate these concepts.
