✦ Synopsis

where the net birefringence approximated zero. The effect of DNA disappeared when the mixture was treated with DNAase (EC 3.1.4.5).

Assuming that DNA and actomyosin behaved independently in solution under shearing force, we calculated the extinction angle and birefringence of the mixtures by applying SAORON'S formula 4. The agreement between the calculated and measured values was rather satisfactory, as seen in Figs. I and 2, which suggested that the assumption made above was justified. According to ROBINSON 5, DNA is contained in embryonic actomyosin preparations, and it is hardly removable by a dilutionprecipitation procedure. It is reported that DNA is also bound to rabbit actomyosin, although the DNA content is much less than that of RNA ~. The present results suggest that there is practically no interaction between DNA and actomyosin in the presence of 0.6 M KC1; however, they co-precipitate on dilution to a low KC1 concentration.

A software system, Chromscan, has been developed on a PDP-12 computer for quantitative analysis of TC-chromatograms and correlated problems in an on-line scanning system. The program controls a one-or two-dimensional scanning process of either a microscope stage or a modified TCchromatogram photome
