✦ Synopsis
A Ni-21wt.%Al alloy and a Ni-21wt.%Al-l.lwt.%TiB 2 composite were prepared by melt spinning at different cooling rates. The resulting microstructures have been examined and the mechanical properties have also been measured. The bend ductility and microhardness of the alloy both increase with decreasing grain size or increasing cooling rate. The hardness of the composite was greater than the alloy even when the cooling rate was lower because of strengthening of TiB 2 particles. The results indicate that refining grain size can improve the ductility of NiAI at room temperature and appropriate additions of TiB 2 particles strengthen the alloy.
