โฆ Synopsis
Accurate values for the area1 superfluid density of thin 4He films on glass have been deduced from the measured periods of two different modes of oscillation in an isothermal third sound Helmholtz oscillator with vapour reservoirs.
No prier knowledge of the Van der Waals potential on glass is used. The data confirm that the linear relationship with the film thickness holds all the way down to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, not showing a crossover from three-to two-dimensional behaviour. The Van der Waals force, also deduced from the measurements, is found to be compatible with the commonly used Sabisky-Anderson potential for glass substrates.
