✦ Synopsis

Sulfation of the 1%Pt-1%Sn/␥-Al 2 O 3 catalyst, resulted in an enhancement of the conversion of NO and C 3 H 8 during the C 3 H 8 -NO-O 2 reaction. IR study showed the formation of bulk aluminum sulfate and surface tin sulfate. The presence of tin sulfate in the catalyst enhances C 3 H 8 oxidation by probably conferring on Pt atoms a stronger partial positive charge than in the case of sulfated 1%Pt/Al 2 O 3 . The improvement of NO conversion on 1%Pt-1%Sn/␥-Al 2 O 3 is explained on the basis of the enhancement of NO oxidation to NO 2 induced by Sn surface species over the catalyst.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with C 3 H 8 was studied over unsulfated and pre-sulfated 1% Pt/␥-Al 2 O 3 , and 1% Pt-2% Sn/␥-Al 2 O 3 catalysts. Carbon residues deposited were evaluated on all samples, after 12 h of C 3 H 8 -NO-O 2 -SO 2 reaction. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) we
