✦ Synopsis
The results of an extensive upgrade of a backscattering dual circular polarization (DCP) Raman optical activity (ROA) spectrometer are reported. The instrument incorporates recent advances in electro-optical technology for the measurement of Raman spectra. The primary improvements are the replacement of a f/4.2 Czerny-Turner spectrograph with an f/1.4 holographic transmission grating spectrograph, the replacement of a front-illuminated CCD detector with a CCD system equipped with a larger, back-thinned array and the substitution of a compensated quartz zeroth-order quarter-wave plate by an intrinsic zeroth-order, polymer quarter-wave plate. These improvements in throughput and detectivity have increased the speed of Raman spectral collection by approximately two orders of magnitude. In the most favorable case, one can see the basic features of the ROA DCP I spectrum of trans-pinane with a total Raman exposure time of only seconds. Examples of ROA spectra collected with the improved instrument are presented.
