✦ Synopsis
Simple gravitational settling of the contents of a conventional mixed pig manure digester before effluent removal is shown to result in improved digester performance. This mode of operation results in a significant increase (36%) in gas yield and reduction in VFA levels through a 33 fold increase in fibre retention, 2 fold increase in fibre breakdown and 26 fold increase in the concentration of active digester bacteria, compared to a conventional unit.
