✦ Synopsis

Interchange of documents is an important part of office communication. Documents which are interchanged in electronic form should not only be printable at the receiver's site, but it should also be possible to edit, reformat and process received documents in the same way as at the sender's site. In order to allow such an interchange between open systems, a standardized office document architecture (ODA) and office document interchange format (ODIF) was developed by the international standardization committees and ratified as ISO 8613 in 1988. Iso 8613 supports mixed-mode documents. This paper also describes how upward compatible office document interchange formats are derived as functional standards from ISO 8613. Finally, initial experience gained with ODA and the user benefits that are expected from ODA are described.
