Abstract
The recent development of a practical advanced analysis method for direct steel frame design is summarized. Since the method has been calibrated against the AISC/LRFD specification, it will produce almost identical member sizes to those of the LRFD method, without the tedious calculations of the effective length factor as well as the timeβconsuming memberβbyβmember capacity checks required by the Code. The aim is to provide a smooth transition from the current indirect LRFD analysis and design practice to the direct advanced analysis method suitable for use in engineering practice; the proposed practical theory and analysis procedures only require simple modifications of an existing inhouse elastic program that is widely available in current engineering practice.
