The ability of impermeable barriers composed of macromolecular organic redox systems to transmit (mediate) oxidation-reduction properties has been studied_ Bar-tiers constructed from redox polymers containing a periodic array of hydroqulnone-quinone functional groups were bonded to platinum electrodes on one face. It has been shown that a voltage was generated between two such electrodes when the opposite faces (membrane side) are contacted with fuel and oxidant, respectively. Since no contact was possible between the reactants and the electrodes, the mediation of the glucoseoxygen reaction through the impermeable barriers is established.
