Abstract
Fringe field effect is equivalent to an extension in size of an RF patch, either as resonator or as antenna. A CAD formula for this extension is derived from DC capacitor and is shown to be applicable for all practical thickness and permittivity ε~r~ of the substrate. For example, for patch resonators of large ε~r~ and for patch antennas on thick substrate (h/λ~0~ < 0.23), the maximum errors in resonant frequencies are only 0.2% and 3%, respectively. The fringe extension through DC is understandable in physics from the point of view of the frequency invariance of fringe field with thin substrate asymptotically. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
