✦ Synopsis
Climate plays a major role in determining variations in Australian crop production. The El NiAc4outhern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon is an important mode of climatic variation affecting the Australian region. Interannual fluctuations of Australian crop production and ENSO might thus be expected to be quite closely related. Analysis of the limited data available at present suggests that fluctuations in some Australian crops are in fact associated with ENSO and may be predictable, well in advance of harvest, from observed sea-surface temperatures around northern Australia.

## Abstract Tropical cyclone activity within the Australian (105°–165°E) and south‐west Pacific (145°E–150°W approximately) regions is examined during seasons affected by contrasting extremes of the Southern Oscillation (SO). In the Australian region, the most pronounced and consistent contrast of
Evidence is presented of the existence of three largely independent precursors of changes in the Southern Oscillation (SO). In a region of the south-east Pacific, anomalously high SST, low pressure, low cloudiness and weak winds tend to occur in December-February (DJF) prior to a year of low SO inde
## Abstract An attempt has been made to investigate decadal‐scale trends in Australian rainfall and in the southern oscillation index (SOI) and their influence on the relationship between them. Monthly rainfall data from high‐quality stations in Australia (from 1900 to 1995), India, Sri Lanka and T
The relationship between interannual variations of the number of tropical cyclones observed in the Australian region during a cyclone season and the Southern Oscillation (SO) has been explored. Strong, significant, stable correlations were found between the SO and cyclone numbers. Years with relativ
