Access to remote computers has improved substantially with the development of public data networks during the 80's. However, bandwidth is still too restricted for interacting smoothly with super computers producing graphical output instead of text. The coming ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is to bring about an additional order of magnitude in data rate, and its tariff should be attractive enough to encourage the development of new distributed applications.
