CA D specialists frequently work in the relative monastic quiet of a university or research centre and are thereby protected from the harsh realities experienced by design staff at the level of application. Industrial and Trade Union experience is already tending to show that the introduction of computers in the field of intellectual work is bringing in its wake many of the problems already encountered when skilled manual work was subjected to technological change.

Unless radical steps are now taken, there is likely to be growing alienation and loss of job satisfaction in the design field. Further, Taylorist assumptions will be reinforced by the computer, and will give rise to stressful situations and diminish the creativity of the designer.
