โฆ Synopsis
Obiectives: To investigate whether sublingual Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN) influences postprandial gastric size. Methods: 19 patients with functional dyspepsia, 17 females and 2 males, median age 42 years (range 27-67 years) were included in a double blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study with sublingual GTN. All patients were scanned twice on consequtive days receiving either placebo or GTN randomly 5 min prior to ingestion of 500 ml meat soup (Tore@; 20 kcal.) Two sonographic sections, a sagittal area and an oblique frontal diameter were obtained at 1, 10, and 20 min postprandially. Symptoms were scored on a Visual Analogue Scale. Results: The size of the proximal stomach was larger at all time points after administration of GTN compared with placebo, and the greatest difference was seen 10 min postprandially (p10.009). Total symptom score after GTN was lower than after placebo (p=O.O26). Two and 11 patients experienced mild headache with placebo and GTN, respectively (p=O.OOS). Conclusidms: GTN improved accommodation of the proximal stomach to a meal in patients with functional dyspepsia, and reduced total symptoms.
