Ca 2ฯฉ influx 7,8 and are inhibited by L-type Ca 2ฯฉ channel blockers 9 , it is possible that the two proposed mechanisms (inhibition of CD26 with subsequent TGF-โค production or Ca 2ฯฉ channel blocking) co-exist and the prevalence of either one depends on the type of target cell and on the relative number of each receptor on its surface. Nevertheless, as already stressed in our article, none of the proposed mechanisms is sufficient to explain the controversial and sometimes opposite effects of exogenous Tat on immune as well as nonimmune cells. The definitive answer to this problem will possibly come from the resolution of the molecular structure of this pleiotropic protein.
