Abstract
Airway washings and bile globulins of chickens were examined by immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoretic methods. A third immunoglobulin besides IgG and IgM was found in serum and in secretions of chickens and may be regarded as the avian IgA. Unlike bile, which had only IgA, some airway washings contained all three immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM and IgA), while others only one or two of them (IgA, or IgG and IgA). No antigenic differences were found between the serum IgA and the secretory IgA of bile and airway washings. A secretory piece, present in mammalian immunoglobulins, was not found in chickens. Chickens have, however, a different secretory component.
