## Abstract The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes in Madagascar is not well known. Serum samples were obtained from 2,169 individuals selected by random sampling in the population living in Antananarivo city. Using HCV antibody test (Monolisa antiβHCV Plus version 2), 36 (1.7%) of the

β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major health problem, affecting over 170 million people worldwide. HCV causes a wide spectrum of liver disease, varying from persistent to asymptomatic infection. To evaluate the role of immunoglobulin (Ig) GM and KM genes in HCV infection, 191 HCVβinfected Thai subjects were studied. These included 43 individuals with transient HCV infection and 148 individuals with persistent chronic HCV infection. The controls consisted of 134 healthy individuals. Several GM and KM alleles were determined by polymerase chain reactionβbased methods. The frequency of G1M(f) homozygotes was lower (52.4% vs. 64.2%, Pβ=β0.03) and the frequency of G1M(z) homozygotes was higher (10.5% vs. 3.7%, Pβ=β0.02) in patients than the respective frequencies in controls. These results suggest that GM genotypes make a significant contribution to the risk of acquiring HCV infection. J. Med. Virol. 73:384β386, 2004. Β© 2004 WileyβLiss, Inc.

In patients with chronic hepatitis B and C virus (HBV, HCV) infection, an inverse relationship in the replicative activity of the two viruses has been reported. In the present study the genotype of HCV was evaluated in 34 consecutive cases found with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-HCV
The Gaza Strip borders the southern part of Israel and Egypt. There is a remarkable difference in the prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) between Israel (0.5%) and Egypt (10%). A few thousand inhabitants cross the borders daily from the Gaza Strip to both countries.
## Abstract To determine the prevalence and clinical significance of IgM and IgA antibody to hepatitis C virus (HCV) core antigen in chronic HCV infection, sera from 47 patients were tested for immunoglobulin class M (IgM) and immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibody to HCV core antigen by solidβphase enzym
## Abstract Parenteral transmission of HCV is well established but other possible routes such as heterosexual transmission are still questioned. The Central African region is characterised by a high HCV endemicity without any evidence on the route of transmission. The information on HCV genotypes t
