Abstract
Two human gamma‐herpesviruses, Epstein–Barr virus and Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus/human herpesvirus 8 display oncogenic potential, causing benign and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders in genetically susceptible or immunosuppressed individuals. As a family of viruses that establish persistent life‐long infections, herpesviruses have evolved strategies to limit innate antiviral responses and evade host immune surveillance. Herpesviruses have developed mechanisms to disrupt antigen presentation, pirate the production of immune regulating cytokines, and inhibit pro‐apoptotic signaling pathways. Although these strategies are designed to facilitate the long‐term persistence of herpesviruses, in certain circumstances they can contribute to viral‐driven carcinogenesis. J. Med.
