โœฆ Synopsis

Polystyrene (PS) was copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and/or glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) through ultrasonic irradiation. Block copolymers PS-b-PMMA, PS-b-PGMA and PS-b-P(MMA-co-GMA) were obtained; their compositions were determined by FTIR and ~H-NMR. The variation of MMA content in PS-b-PMMA with irradiation time was examined. Copolymers PS-b-PGMA and PS-b-P(MMA-co-GMA) were used as supports for immobilizing trypsin and catalase. It was found that PS-b-P(MMA-co-GMA) had a lower capacity for enzyme binding because of the presence of MMA units. The trypsin bound on PS-b-P(MMA-co-GMA) exhibited an activity about 40% of that of free trypsin; if it was bound on PS-b-PGMA, it lost all of its activity. Catalase on both copolymers retained roughly 25% of its activity.

Previous work in our group has shown that hydrophobic modification of chitosan and Nafion ยฎ membranes can be used to alter the transport properties of chemically modified electrodes. In this paper, we employ the same hydrophobically modified chitosan and Nafion ยฎ membranes to form and characterize e
