โœฆ Synopsis

The International Geographical Union at its 25 t h Congress in Paris, August 27 th 31 st, 1984 approved the formation of this new Stua y Group. Although food crises and famines are as old as mankind, they continue to plague the modern world. Interventions may cure the immediate crisis of severe malnutrition and starvation, but potentially set in motion an aftermath Of possibilities for chronic malnutrition on the one hand and inappropriate exploitation of natural resources on the other. Projects generated in the wake of crises may temporarily increase income, but also reduce livelihood and exacerbate inequalit ies in social structure. Irrigation schemes rushed into position at times of famine may put governments in debt and make local populations even more vulnerable. This Study Group aims at better understanding for the right measures to improve the carrying capacity of regions under stress.

Formed in order to carry out research in a previous lacuna of geographical education the FFCM Study Group will encourage in-depth case studies in different continents to promote I.

Development of food crisis warning systems which will avert rather than only forewarn of the likelihood of food crises by defining adequate land use patterns 2, Understanding of the relief-development interface and its impact on community nutrition 3.

Augmented evaluation methods for monitoring short term crisis interventions in view of long term food security 4.

Improved survival strategies in local education programmes 5, Publication of results and development of training material for food crisis managers from ad ministrations and agencies.

The FFCM Study Group, supported by an international panel of multi-disciplinary advisors will together with its d istinguished corresponding members work closely with other IGU research bodies, particularly with the Food Systems, Health, Water, and Rural Development Groups.
