✦ Synopsis
In this Note we report values of ignition temperatures of a high-ash Portuguese anthracite that were measured using equipment previously used by Chen et al. , and by Brooks and Essenhigh [2], based on the Cassel and Liebmann furnace technique . In this method, small samples of sievesized particles are floated into heated air at a very dilute concentration, and the lowest air temperature (Ti,g) at which the particles will just ignite is determined.
The characteristic of the coal used in these experiments that is of particular significance, in this extension of the still-sparse data-base of ignition temperatures, is the very high ash. The proximate and ultimate analyses are given in Table . At nearly 50% ash this far exceeds anything previously reported ([1, 2J--see also ). However, as we show below, the values obtained for the ignition temperatures are reasonably comparable to those reported by Chen et al. for a Pennsylvania anthracite.
