✦ Synopsis

A melhod for measuring the ignition energy of propellants using hot wirt~ at high hea't fluxes is described and the influence of pressure, propellant temperature and ignition rime is determined. Several experiments have shox~u good reproducibility of results using the equipment proposed. The difference between ignition at high and low heat fluxes is discussed. A method for corrc'cling ignition energy with respect to the wire diameter has been propos,.xl.

An experimental and theoretical study is reported on the ignition process of a low vulnerability ammunition (LOVA) propellant bed in a 127-mm (5-in) bore gun charge. The theoretical investigation was with a two-phase flow interior ballistics code and the model predictions showed the marked influence

By means of a dual-flash X-ray technique, propellant grain velocities during ignition have been determined for the Navy 5-in./38 gun. At the completion of ignition, the velocity profile along the grain bed is sharply peaked with maximun velocity at the propellant free surface.

The ignition of composite solid propellants by CO 2 laser irradiation at low pressures has been investigated experimentally. Three ignition modes are found at subalJnospheric pressures: self-sustaining ignition, non-self-sustaining ignition, and pulsating ignition. Here, the self-sustaining and the
