✦ Synopsis
The properties of IFRA and NBU of a component have been widely used in the theory of engineering reliability. In this paper, we deal with two new classes {IFRA * t 0} and {NBU * t0} of life distributions. The ÿrst is characterized by an increasing failure rate average after t0, while for the second the life length of a new item is stochastically larger than the residual life length after t 0. The properties of these classes are studied in detail. Furthermore, a nonparametric test is proposed which is designed to test the hypothesis whether a NBU * t0 element is strictly new better than used after time t0.
