✦ Synopsis

A method for the identification of polymers is proposed, which consists in the analysis of their phenolic pyrolysis products by a combination of pyrolysis gas and thin-layer chromatography.

Phenolic and epoxide resins, polycarbonates, polyphenyl ethers, polysulphones and some polyimides, that form volatile phenols when pyrolyzed, are included. A convenient method of vacuum ampoule pyrolysis is described and the interpretation of the results is discussed.
