✦ Synopsis

This paper briefly reports an industrial application of modelling and control for a large kinescope glass furnace. It is a complex and nonlinear process. Heuristically based on a set of rough models, a compound adaptive control scheme which includes modified PID, feedforward loops, nonlinear compensation and a self-tuning controller is proposed for this multivafiable process. A computer system (Intel 86/330A) with real-time operating system (iRMX86) is used to implement the on-line computer control. Real-time operation records have indicated that the modelling and control are satisfactory for the glass furnace and are economically effective.

A non-linear model has been developed for a gas-fired furnace in which oil is heated. The model is applicable from minimum to maximum heat load of the furnace. The dynamics of the model have been compared to experimental results, which were obtained for a pilot-scale furnace. They are in good agreem
