✦ Synopsis

Central Office

ICID supports food security and promotes methods to conserve water, increase the productivity per unit of water, reducing non beneficial uses, even relocating uses from low to high value crops, tapping uncommitted outflows from systems, and seeking new sources to meet the additional demands. ICID instituted the WatSave Awards to recognize outstanding contributions of professionals to water conservation, water saving for efficient water use and to develop sustainable use of this critical resource. ICID announced three categories of WatSave Awards: 1. WatSave Technology Award, 2. WatSave Innovative Water Management Award and 3. WatSave Young Professional Award. The awards are made for an outstanding contribution to the conservation/saving of water resources through practical results or research. Each award carries prize money of US$ 1500 and a citation, and the Awards are presented at the annual IEC meeting of ICID. ICID Central Office has brought out an attractive information brochure giving brief information about the ICID WatSave Programme, Categories of Awards, Nomination and Selection Procedures. Mr. Michael Snell (UK), Team Leader of an Independent Review Team for International Program for Technology and Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID) visited India from 26 -29 March 2001 to discuss issues concerning IPTRID with the Indian National Committee of ICID (INCID), important institutions and persons in connection with an external review of IPTRID. The other members of the Review Team are Mr. Henri Tardieu (France) and Dr. Stanley Ponce (USA). During the meeting with Mr. Snell, the Secretary General Dr. C.D. Thatte had extensive discussions on the strategies and priorities of IPTRID, its quality, relevance and impact, its effectiveness and efficiency of governance structure and management, as well as expectations of developing countries from IPTRID. Mr. Snell was apprised of the contributions that can be effectively made by ICID through its network of National Committees in various member countries, as well as by workbodies.
