Detection of new carbonyl-type functionality at the surfaces of powdered bituminous coals is illustrated by the technique of photoacoustic infrared Fourier transform (PAIFT) spectroscopy. These species are generated both by base-promoted and by thermal decompositions of precursor peroxides, postulat
