Interface between CAD and FEM systems

An interface has been developed to act between CAD and finite element modelling (FEM) systems, by Fegs Ltd. Known as CADFEM, it provides for the transfer of design models generated on a CAD system into analysis models for FEM systems.

According to Fegs, the CADFEM system provides the filtering, mapping, cleaning and rebuilding operations necessary for the transfer. FEMGEN (another Fegs product) provides the necessary transformation functions for detail removal, subdivision, abstraction and inclusion of engineering properties.

CADFEM reads the CAD geometry and transforms it into a highly connected form suitable for mesh generation in FEMGEN. Auxiliary finite element data such as physical properties, material properties, constraints and loading are then added interactively using FEMGEN.

Files to be read by CADFEM may be formatted either according to the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES Version 2.0) or as FEMGEN input files, which, according to Fegs, are compatible with a variety of different CAD vendors' systems.
