Abstract
This paper is concerned with the motion of an annulus of fluid which is contained between two cylinders rotating about their common axis. The fluid is differentially heated in the horizontal. Examination of the stability of the wave rΓ©gime flow is carried out by perturbing an averaged form of a nonβlinear waveβrΓ©gime solution. This leads to a linear system describing the disturbance and is solved approximately using a truncated Fourier series. By this means theoretical stability criteria are obtained in terms of the Rossby number and the wave number. These results are compared with experimental wave change criteria and qualitative agreement is found.
