✦ Synopsis
Hypertrophy of one pyramid as a result of degeneration of the other has been described occasionally; however, most of tlie references are rather old and so are iiot available at Batavia. Fortunately in 1929 and 1930 Van der Bruggen, besides describing one case of his ow~i, reviewed all literature up to that time. From his review the follpwing data are extracted :
Von Monakow (1897) was the first to describe the condition in experimental animals. I n a newborn puppy he ablated the motor area on one side, thus producing atrophy of one pyramid, and after some time lie found the remaining pyramid had increased in size much beyond normal. Human cases showing pyramidal hypertrophy have been described by R number of investigators. DGjGrine ( '01) in his Aizatomie cles ceTitres w m x z ~x described his patient " Picherin," who at the age of 7 developed a hemiplegia and died 77 years later. At autopsy tlie preserved pyramid was larger than usual, but iiot very inucli so. The next year DGjGrine and DGjBrine ( '02) described a patient who suffered from convulsioiis, followed by a left-sided hemiplegia, when 15 iiioiiths of age and died at the age of 24. The right cerebral hemisphere of this patient showed extensive lesions. The pyramid on the right side proved to be totally degenerated and replaced by a glial 1
