This is an outline of the Aomoto-Gelfand theory of multivariable hypergeometric integrals and Varchenko's formula for the determinant of the period matrix of the hypergeometric pairing. A signiÿcant feature of this work is the use of the theory of arrangements of hyperplanes to transform a problem in analysis into one in combinatorics.
