Studies of the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy are hampered by the lack of a satisfactory animal model. We examined the neurological features of rats after bile duct ligation fed a hyperammonemic diet (BDL+HD). Six groups were studied: sham, sham pair-fed, hyperammonemic, bile duct ligation (

โฆ Synopsis
The brain energy metabolism of rats affected by chronic hepatic encephalopathy due to portacaval shunting was monitored by in vivo 31 P-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy before and after ammonium acetate administration. With respect to healthy unoperated and to sham operated controls, portacaval shunting decreased the levels of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) visible brain phosphocreatine and nucleoside phosphates, and the intracellular [free Mg 2 + ]. Ammonium acetate induced a further decrease of the levels of the NMR detectable phosphocreatine and nucleoside triphosphates and of the [free Mg 2 + ], while the PMR spectra of the brain of non-shunted rats did not show any significant change even after treatment with ammonium acetate.

Crude (P2) synaptosomes derived from rats with acute hepatic encephalopathy (HE) induced with thioacetamide showed a slightly increased uptake of radiolabeled arginine (ARC) and a 2.5-fold enhanced conversion of newly taken-up ARC to both glutamate (GLU) and y-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as compared wi
The pathogenicity and cell tropism of mouse hepatitis virus (MHV-JHM-strain) in the developing mouse (Balblc) and rat (Wistar and Lewis) brain were analysed. Intracranial infection of Balb/c mice at postnatal day 5 induced a lethal encephalitis in all animals. Of Wistar rats infected at day 2 or 5 a
