Different bacteria, isolated from soil by the enrichment method, were able to grow on phthalic acid as carbon source. Protocatechuate was identified as intermediate in phthalate metabolism. All phthalategrown bacteria oxidized phthalate and protocatechuate rapidly without having a lag-period. Benzoi
