β¦ Synopsis
The mechamsm of the hydrogen evolution reactlon (HER) on an Au electrode m 0 5-2 x 10m5 M NaOH and KOH solutions was mvestlgated by observmg the Tafel relatIonshIp, dlfferentlal pseudo-capacitance and time constant of the electron transfer reactlon The HER kmetlcs follows the slow discharge mechamsm over the whole range of solution concentration It IS demonstrated that at high concentrations, 0 5-O 01 M, the underpotential deposition (upd) of alkali metal takes place concomitantly, and it leads to polsomng of active sites of gold and thus strongly depresses the electrocatalytlc actlvlty Anomalous concentration dependence of overpotentlal was observed at lower concentrations and its posstble cause 1s discussed m relation to the upd of alkah metals Key worcis hydrogen evolution reaction, elementary reaction, underpotentlal deposition of alkah metal atoms, active sites, gold electrode

A study of the hydrogen-evolution reaction on gold eIectrodes is reported. Two mechanisms are shown to operate between O-0 and O-3 V(he). At low cds d log i/dq = 23RT/2F, x 2\*3RT/I;at higher cds. it changes to 2 This indicates a transition from a Tafel to a Heyrovsky rate-determining step. In 1.0 M
