## Abstract A new process for D‐glucose hydrogenation in 50 wt% aqueous solution, into sorbitol in a 1.5 m^3^ gas–liquid–solid three‐phase flow airlift loop reactor (ALR) over Raney Nickel catalysts has been developed. Five main factors affecting the reaction time and molar yield to sorbitol, inclu

✦ Synopsis
The reactor size and the solid phase have an important influence on the operation behaviour of airlift-loop reactors. Liquid velocity, dispersion, local gas holdup, and local solid holdup along the reactor axis have been measured in airlift-loop rotors with outer loop and a volume of 8OL and 8OOL respectively. The measurements were done in twc+phase-systems @i&water) and threephase-systems (air, water, solid). To investigate the influence of the solid phase, Werent solid materials and different solid loadings were used_ The liquid velocity and the dispersion were compared with results gained from a 2L outer loop reactor and a 70L inner loop mactor.
