β¦ Synopsis
Both the direct evidence from tine oictures and the analvsis of svstematic electrochemical investigations support a general explanation of the anode (or cathode) effect, which is based on the conditions of hvdrodvnamic instability described bv Helmholtz and Taylor. Further confknation of this hydrodyna& interpretation is provided by ¢ critical current density studies carried out to ultimately establish a method for in situ determination of the alumina content in cryolite-alumina melts. _ NOMENCLATURE current density electrode potential specific heat flow wall temperature, relative to liquid critical rate of gas evolution critical current density density of liquid density of gas surface tension acceleration radius of wire thickness of gaseous envelope enclosing the wire electrode reaction vatence Faraday's constant molecular weight of gas equivalent concentration of electrolytic solution supersaturation degree of dissolved gas in electrolytic solution pressure wavelength alumina concentration
