✦ Synopsis
Although it is well known that the effect of alkalies on the rate of hydration and on the nature of hydration products usually causes an increase in early strengths and a decrease in final strengths of cement paste and concrete (1), certain observations on strength development in portland cements containing readily soluble alkalies require further research. Particularly interesting in this respect is the striking gain in compressive strength observed with cement of high allte and moderately high C3A contents at later ages of the hydration process and at high gypsum level (2). This gain has been tentatively attributed not only to the increase in the degree of hydration but also to a redistribution of SO 3 through S-rlch C-(S-S)-H resulting in a more uniform final gel structure. In order to obtain further informatlon~on how the presence of readily soluble alkalies influences the later strength increase of cements high in allte and C^A and to confirm that the behaviour of these two constituents is actually responslble'~for the later strength gain, we have followed the hydration and strength development in pastes prepared from a mixture of pure phases.
