T h e two problems of hydranth formation and of polarity in Tubularia have much in common, yet, as I shall try to show they may sometimes involve fundamentally distinct factors. Failure to distinguish the proper field of each has led, I believe, to unfortunate and unnecessary confusion.

Pigment distribution presages hydranth regeneration in the marine hydroid Tubularia. We suggest that such a distribution could result from a reaction-diffusion system. A model system based on a practical reaction scheme is studied and spatial structures found which closely resemble this pigment dist

The capacity of hydranths of Tubularia to regenerate or recoiistitute when cut during a process of reorganization already in progress has been the subject of many investigations and much controversy. The discussion has concerned both the fate of the distal fragment and of the stock of the primordium
