## Abstract This paper reports on dynamically gain‐flattened C‐ and L‐band erbium‐doped fiber amplifiers (DGF‐EDFAs), whose dynamic gain ranges are above 20 dB and 24 dB, respectively. This paper gives the detailed test and comparative results for DGF‐EDFAs based on the use of a voltage‐controlled

✦ Synopsis
A new hybrid erbium-doped-fiber design is proposed for amplifiers with flattened gain spectra. The design prescribes different parts of the erbium-doped fiber core to be codoped with different materials. Due to specific relations between the codopant material and their emission and absorption spectra, the hybrid-fiber design makes use of opposite gain tilts to cancel out each other. Numerical results indicate equally good gain flattening properties as competing methods, and in addition to this improved stability towards longitudinal pump power redistribution is predicted.
